No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.

But what do you do when the machine is also extraordinary as is the story behind it ? I have the nicest two guys in my living room re doing the upholstery of the sofas - such skill, such patience and working with amazing speed and precision . Old world charm and dignity - perfect craftsmen and the most charming conversationalists .Their sewing machine , an ancient Adler , whirring like a dream .....am blessed !!
Bhaiyya ji tells me the Adler belonged to a refugee from Lahore and it was the one personal possession he managed to bring with him during Partition. He knew his life and the future of his family depended on it. The respect with which Bhaiya ji is handling the machine says it all. He tells me he takes such good care of it for he knows what it meant to the person who finally sold it to him.
When you meet someone who is devoted to his craft, respects and values his tools and approaches the job at hand with dignity and discipline you feel proud to be a part of his world

Lovely piece, Viji. I can tell that you were much moved by the story of the Adler.

Addle pated comment notwithstanding, a sewing machine is a super friend, and can perform the most wonderful of miracles.
